Howard Southerland Boney, Jr. has served as District Attorney for the Seventh Judicial District for over twenty-eight years. In January of 1978 he was appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to fill the unexpired term of Frank Brown who was appointed Superior Court Judge.
Mr. Boney grew up in Tarboro and received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. While in Law School, he served as Attorney General for the University of North Carolina Law School. Prior to his association with the District Attorney's Office, he practiced law as a member of the Fountain, Goodwyn, and Boney Law Firm in Tarboro.
Mr. Boney was one of the first District Attorneys in the State to develop and implement a Victim/Witness Program. The program is designed to assist victims and witnesses in their involvement with the court system by keeping them in close contact with the District Attorney's Office.
Mr. Boney has been very active in local government affairs holding positions with the Tarboro Historic Commission, Tarboro United Way Fund, Wesleyan College Foundation Advisory Board, and the Alumni Board of Directors of Louisburg College. He has served as Co-Chairman of the Tarboro United Way Fund, a member of the Mayor's Human Relations Council, Chairman of the Tarboro Redevelopment Commission and currently serves as a member of the Governor's Crime Commission. Mr. Boney is an active member of St. James United Methodist Church, where he has served on the Board of Trustees.
